Govt. undermining multi-party democracy: Madhav Nepal
Unified Socialist Chairman Madhav Kumar Nepal has accused the Nepali Congress-UML-led government of undermining multi-party democracy and attempting to push for a two-party system.
Speaking at his party’s central committee meeting on Friday, Nepal criticized the government for seeking to establish a one-party dictatorship under the guise of a two-party system.

Balen Shah, the Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC), has thanked US President Donald Trump for making Nepali citizens feel that their country is better.
Responding to Trump’s comments about fraud in US aid to Nepal, Mayor Shah took to social media to express his gratitude. Shah said that Trump’s remarks made Nepalis appreciate their own country’s strengths.
Public debt surpasses 45 percent of Nepal’s GDP
Nepal’s public debt has now exceeded 45 percent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
A report from the Public Debt Management Office indicates that the government’s total loan reached Rs 2.611 trillion by February 12 in the current fiscal year (2024/25).
“The public debt stood at Rs 2.434 trillion at the beginning of the fiscal year and has risen by Rs 176 billion by February 12, bringing the total debt to 45.77 percent of GDP,” the report revealed.
Gold price falls by Rs 1,000 per tola
After rising consistently for the past three days, the price of gold dropped today (Friday).
Gold prices, which had been increasing since Tuesday and reached Rs 171,000 per tola on Thursday, declined by Rs 1,000 today.
The Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers reported that the current market price of gold was set at Rs 170,000 per tola.
Additionally, the price of silver also decreased by Rs 5 per tola. Silver was bought and sold for Rs 1,990 per tola today.
Birgunj Customs Office collects Rs 94.52 billion in seven months
The Birgunj Customs Office has collected Rs 94.52 billion in revenue over the first seven months of the current fiscal year, exceeding last year’s collection by Rs 7.95 billion.
The increase is attributed to a rise in the import of industrial raw materials and petroleum products, according to Amit Tiwari, the office’s information officer.
Pathibhara tension: Transport shutdown announced from Friday midnight
Transport entrepreneurs in Taplejung have announced a shutdown following a clash in the Pathibhara area on Thursday.
Taplejung Pathibhara Transport Services Pvt. Ltd. issued a press release declaring a halt to transport services from midnight on Friday (February 21).
The announcement stated that no vehicles, except for ambulances, fire trucks, and milk and vegetable carriers, will be allowed to operate at any checkpoints entering Taplejung district via Mechi Highway, Tamor Corridor, Dharan-Basantapur-Gufa Road, and other local roads in the district.
International Mother Language Day marked today
The UN International Mother Language Day was marked across the world including in Nepal today calling upon the countries to promote the preservation and protection of all languages used by peoples of the world.
The International Mother Language Day was proclaimed by the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in November 1999.
Nepal imports rice worth Rs 14 billion
Despite maintaining the image of an agricultural country, Nepal imported rice worth Rs 14 billion and maize worth over Rs 9.5 billion in the first seven months of the current fiscal year.
