CAN bans Sandeep Lamichhane for code of conduct violation

KATHMANDU: The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has suspended star cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane for one match after finding him guilty of violating its code of conduct.

Lamichhane, who is captaining Bagmati Province in the ongoing Jay Trophy Elite Cup, publicly criticized umpiring decisions through social media.

His dissatisfaction with what he claimed were ‘wrong decisions’ by the umpires led to disciplinary action. Criticizing umpiring decisions is deemed a breach of CAN’s code of conduct.

According to CAN spokesperson Chhumbi Lama, Lamichhane was penalized with three demerit points based on recommendations from the match referee and technical committee.

Consequently, he is barred from participating in one match in any CAN-organized tournament.

In response, Lamichhane thanked his supporters on social media but refrained from commenting on the decision. Meanwhile, speculation about his possible retirement has surfaced, adding to the challenges he is currently facing.

Once celebrated as Nepal’s most popular cricketer, with international franchise league appearances bolstering his global fame, Lamichhane has recently been navigating controversies and a decline in performance.

For personal reasons, he has also changed his mobile number, though he assured fans that his WhatsApp account would remain active for a few days.

Lamichhane’s suspension has sparked mixed reactions from fans, with some supporting his stance while others call for greater discipline from the cricket star.
