Nepali Congress central committee to meet today as dispute over convention date persists

KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress (NC) central committee is holding its meeting today at 2 pm at the party’s central office in Sanepa, according to Chief Secretary Krishna Prasad Paudel.

The meeting, which began on October 14, has been repeatedly postponed as disagreements continue over the timing of the party’s 15th General Convention.

The key dispute centers on whether the convention, scheduled for March 5, should be held before or after the upcoming House of Representatives elections. The disagreement has prolonged the central committee discussions, even though leaders completed putting forth their views last Thursday.

Despite expectations that party president Sher Bahadur Deuba’s return from Singapore would help resolve the internal rift, no significant progress has been seen.

General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma, along with several other leaders, insist that the party must hold its regular or special convention within December. Meanwhile, Deuba loyalists, including some office bearers and former officials, argue that the convention should take place after the elections, in April 2026.

With neither side willing to shift its stance, the central committee meeting is expected to once again confront the internal deadlock.
