Govt providing free testing and treatment for childhood diabetes: Health Minister Poudel

NAWALPUR: Minister for Health and Population Pradeep Poudel has said that the government is preparing to provide free diabetes testing and treatment for children across the country.

Speaking at a diabetes screening and awareness program in Gaindakot, Nawalparasi (Bardaghat-Susta East), Minister Poudel shared that the initiative will soon be implemented in all seven provinces.

“We are working to provide free testing and treatment for diabetes in children across the country,” he said. “There is a general belief that diabetes only affects older people, but children are also vulnerable to this disease.”

Minister Poudel emphasized the need for child-focused programs in Nepal’s health system, including those addressing hereditary conditions. He also expressed concern over lifestyle changes and digital screen overuse among children, which are contributing to various health problems.

“The state must take responsibility for the health of both children and senior citizens,” he said. “If the government fails to provide this support, it cannot claim to be a welfare state.”

Dr. Sushil Koirala, Country Director of Nura Health Foundation, explained that there are two types of diabetes, with Type 1 primarily affecting children.

“In Type 1 diabetes, the body stops producing insulin entirely, so children must rely on insulin injections for life,” he said. He noted that around 600 children in Nepal are currently registered as Type 1 diabetes patients, though the actual number is likely higher due to underreporting and treatment abroad.

Type 1 diabetes is currently being treated at five hospitals in Nepal, and Dr. Koirala stressed the need for increased awareness and early intervention.

Children living with Type 1 diabetes also shared their experiences at the event, noting that with timely treatment, they can lead normal lives.

The screening program was organized in collaboration with Gaindakot Basic Hospital and Quest Pharmaceuticals Pvt. Ltd. as part of the 47th founding anniversary of Bijaya Bikash Resource Center.

Speaking at the event, Chairman of Bijaya Bikash Resource Center, Krishna Prasad Sapkota, said the program aimed to raise awareness about diabetes and promote healthier lifestyles.

“Health is the greatest wealth,” he said. “We must improve our diet and daily habits to stay healthy.”
