KATHMANDU: Prime Minister (PM) KP Sharma Oli has urged the public to avoid long-distance travel unless necessary and to remain in safe locations, following a forecast of widespread rainfall across the country.
Taking to social media on Sunday morning, PM Oli stated: “The Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rainfall in various parts of the country this afternoon. I request everyone to follow updates from security agencies and exercise caution to avoid weather-related disasters. Please refrain from non-essential travel and stay in safe places. I also instruct security personnel to remain on high alert.”
According to meteorologists, rainfall has been ongoing in several regions since Saturday night.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) also issued an alert on Sunday morning, warning of heavy rainfall in many parts of Gandaki Province. Residents in the affected areas have been advised to remain on high alert.
According to the Department, light to moderate rainfall with thunder and lightning is likely in many hilly areas, including Koshi, Madhes, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Karnali Provinces, and at a few places elsewhere.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also likely in some hilly areas of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki Provinces. Light to moderate rain or snowfall is possible in some parts of the high hills and mountainous regions.
