KATHMANDU: Dalit community leaders staged a sit-in at Maitighar Mandala on Saturday, calling for the immediate operation of three stalled development committees aimed at supporting marginalized groups.
Led by the Nepal Backward Classes (OBC) Federation, the protest demanded the reactivation of the Neglected, Oppressed and Dalit Class Upliftment Development Committee, the Backward Classes (OBC) Upliftment Development Committee, and the Badi Community Upliftment Development Committee.
Federation President Gajendra Thakur highlighted the urgency of appointing office bearers to the vacant positions in all three committees and reappointing long-serving staff.
“These committees play a critical role in empowering marginalized communities, but they have been left non-functional for too long,” Thakur said.
The Federation also urged the government to swiftly implement OBC reservations by approving the surname listing recommendation forwarded by the National Inclusion Commission.
Additionally, they called for the enforcement of past agreements made between the government and various marginalized community federations, including the Dalit and Badi communities.
