Understanding anti-constitutional activities is crucial: Speaker Ghimire

KATHMANDU: Speaker Devraj Ghimire has emphasized that safeguarding the constitution and the rule of law is only possible if the people of Nepal are able to recognize anti-constitutional activities in a timely manner.

Extending his congratulations and best wishes to all Nepalis at home and abroad on the occasion of Constitution Day and National Day today, Speaker Ghimire noted that the Gen Z movement on September 8 and 9  — just ten days before the 10th anniversary of the constitution’s promulgation—has brought about a new public consciousness.

He said the movement raised important issues of transparency and good governance and that the protest by youth demanding an end to corruption and misrule should not have been met with repression. He added that attempting to dissolve a people-elected legislature is itself an unconstitutional act.

Speaker Ghimire stated that the implementation of the federal democratic republican framework has enabled elections at federal, provincial, and local levels.

With the participation of people’s representatives, a new governance structure has been established, and power has been devolved to strengthen local governments and improve service delivery.

He reminded that rights once taken from the people have been restored through the parliamentary process and stressed that the only alternative to democracy is a more advanced democracy.

The constitution promulgated in 2015, after years of struggle and sacrifice, remains a foundational document that reflects Nepal’s realities and values. He added that it ensures unity in diversity, guarantees equal rights, and fosters shared national pride by ending all forms of discrimination and inequality.
