Constitution Day being observed across the country today

KATHMANDU: Constitution Day — Asoj 3 — is being observed across the country today with various programs and events. The day marks the promulgation of the Constitution of Nepal, drafted by the people’s representatives through the Constituent Assembly in 2015.

This is the seventh written constitution of Nepal, and it aims to establish socialism by ensuring citizens’ socioeconomic and cultural rights. It holds special significance as it was adopted through the Constituent Assembly, reflecting the aspirations of the Second People’s Movement, the Comprehensive Peace Accord, and the broader peace process.

The peace accord was signed between the then seven-party alliance and the CPN (Maoist). Significantly, the Constitution has formally institutionalized Nepal as a Federal Democratic Republic, ending the previous unitary system and monarchy.

Under the new federal structure, Nepal is divided into seven provinces, with 753 local levels and a federal government. The national charter consists of 35 Parts, 308 Articles, and 9 Schedules. A special function is being held this morning at the Army Pavilion in Tundikhel to mark the occasion.

Various awareness campaigns, discussions, and public discourses are being organized nationwide. Special features on Constitution Day are being published in print and broadcast in electronic media.
