Sudurpaschim govt directs awareness drive against chhaupadi practice

KAILALI: The Sudurpaschim Province government has instructed all local levels and District Administration Offices across the province to launch awareness campaigns against harmful social practices, including the discriminatory chhaupadi tradition.

A cabinet meeting held at the Chief Minister and Council of Ministers’ Office in Dhangadhi on Friday decided to take immediate steps after a recent incident in Krishna Municipality-1, Kanchanpur, where a woman died from a snakebite while staying in a chhau hut during her menstruation.

According to the provincial government, the incident highlighted the continued danger posed by the chhaupadi tradition, prompting the administration to intensify efforts to eliminate such harmful customs and regulate discriminatory behaviors including caste-based untouchability.

The government also emphasized effective implementation of the Chhaupadi Practice Elimination Policy, 2076 and its corresponding action plan. Provincial, district, and local-level committees have been directed to hold regular meetings and conduct field monitoring to ensure accountability and enforcement.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Social Development has been tasked with formulating a province-wide annual action plan targeting schools, communities, and religious institutions. Through this, awareness campaigns and social initiatives will be carried out to combat chhaupadi-related practices and caste-based discrimination.
