UML politburo meeting begins

KATHMANDU: The politburo meeting of the CPN-UML has officially begun at the party headquarters in Chyasal, Lalitpur, under the chairmanship of Prime Minister and party chair KP Sharma Oli.

According to party publicity department chief Rajendra Gautam, the meeting is focused on continued deliberations over the proposed amendments to the party statute, which were presented by Vice-Chair Bishnu Paudel in an earlier session.

On Friday, seven Politburo members expressed their views on the amendment proposal. The remaining members are scheduled to present their opinions during today’s meeting, Gautam informed.

The proposed amendment seeks to remove the existing 70-year age limit and the two-term cap for holding party office, as outlined in Article 64 of the party’s 2021 statute. It also recommends restructuring the party leadership framework by fixing the number of office bearers at 15 and central committee members at 251. The proposal outlines a three-tier structure consisting of a Central Committee, Politburo, and Standing Committee.

Additionally, the proposal suggests officially recognizing the office bearers as members of the Standing Committee — a shift from the current structure where they are considered part of the party secretariat.

The meeting, which is centered on preparations for the upcoming statute convention, is expected to conclude today. The UML has scheduled its Statute General Convention to take place from September 5 to 7 at the Sunrise International Convention Centre in Godavari, Lalitpur.
