JHAPA: Former Koshi Province Chief Minister Uddhav Thapa was attacked on Saturday evening near Jukekhadhi along the East-West Highway in Kankai Municipality.

Thapa sustained injuries, including damage to his eye, and is receiving treatment at Birtacity Hospital.

The incident occurred while he was returning from the annual general meeting of the Nepal Press Union Jhapa held in Domukha.

The altercation reportedly began when Thapa’s vehicle (Ba 1 Jha 653) attempted to overtake a Nepal Electricity Authority vehicle (Ba 1 Jha 1870). Despite Thapa’s security personnel identifying him as a “VIP,” a youth punched him during the dispute.

Police have arrested two individuals involved in the assault: 49-year-old Bhakta Bahadur Katuwal of Shivasatakshi Municipality-11 and 42-year-old Prithvi Shrestha of Kankai Municipality-3. They are currently in custody at the Birtamod Area Police Office.

Nepali Congress Jhapa has condemned the attack. Secretary Nabin Bimali called for legal action against Katuwal and Shrestha. A press conference scheduled for today morning will provide further details on the incident.
