Minister Bhattarai announces special task force to regulate foreign employment sector

KATHMANDU: Minister for Labour, Employment and Social Security Rajendra Singh Bhandari has announced the formation of a special task force to regulate Nepal’s foreign employment sector.

Speaking at an event in Kathmandu on Thursday to mark the 25th International Migrants Day, Minister Bhandari said the foreign employment sector has been a source of numerous complaints, which the new task force will address. The task force, operating under the ministry, will include representatives from the Crime Investigation Bureau (CIB) and the Department of Crime Investigation, among others.

He emphasized that business operators in the sector should take the lead in eliminating malpractices. He also cautioned that failure to improve governance in the aftermath of the Jan-G Movement could lead to another major upheaval.

Highlighting the economic significance of foreign employment, Minister Bhandari said the sector has greatly contributed to Nepal’s economy and reforms are essential.

International Migrants Day is observed globally on December 18 to commemorate the adoption of the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families by the United Nations in 1990.

According to the World Migration Report published by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), an estimated 281 million people worldwide live as migrants. In Nepal, remittances account for over a quarter of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).
