Over 1,500 security personnel deployed for NPL at TU Cricket Ground

KATHMANDU: More than 1,500 security personnel have been deployed at the TU Cricket Ground for the second edition of the Nepal Premier League (NPL), officials said.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Pawan Kumar Bhattarai, heading the NPL security operations, stated that 1,223 personnel from the Nepal Police are stationed at the venue.

Additional security support, including armed traffic units and personnel arranged by the Cricket Association of Nepal, has raised the total security deployment to over 1,500. The measures take into account the stadium’s new structures and the growing cricket enthusiasm among Nepalis.

“This time, spectators will be allowed entry through up to three separate gates, preventing large crowds from gathering in a single location as happened last year,” Bhattarai said.

Security monitoring includes 42 CCTV cameras operating 24/7 and drone surveillance. Special attention has been given to ensure that people without tickets or passes do not gather near the gates, with barbed wire also installed along the outer walls.

In addition to standard police deployment, security measures involve investigative checks, security screening devices, and sniffer dogs, conducted before each day’s matches.

Traffic management poses some challenges, as vehicles for various Tribhuvan University departments pass along the main stadium road. Security personnel are also deployed to safeguard players’ accommodation and movement to and from the stadium.
