CHITWAN: Of the bodies recovered from the banks of the Trishuli and Narayani rivers following the devastating Bhotekoshi River flood in Rasuwa, 280 have been safely managed at a designated site in Devghat, Chitwan, after forensic examinations and the collection of DNA samples.
According to Bharatpur Hospital spokesperson Dr. Ram Prasad Sapkota, security personnel began bringing bodies recovered from the Trishuli River to the hospital on the night of August 27 for preservation. A medical team led by forensic experts was mobilised from the morning of August 28 to conduct necessary forensic examinations, collect DNA and other biological samples, and document the bodies to facilitate their identification.
According to Rameshwor Poudel, chief superintendent of police at the District Police Office, Chitwan, 321 bodies have so far been recovered from the Trishuli and Narayani rivers. Of these, 12 have been identified and handed over to their relatives.
Of the recovered bodies, 66 are women, 116 are men, seven are boys and six are girls, while 126 remain unidentified or are in an unidentified condition.
Poudel said the bodies had been safely managed at the Devghat site in accordance with international standards so that they could be identified in the future. Superintendent of Police Poudel said the search for bodies along the riverbanks is continuing daily. He said bodies recovered from the rivers are being brought to Bharatpur Hospital for forensic examinations and DNA sample collection before being safely managed at the Devghat site.
