KATHMANDU: Following the Gen-Z protests, Nepal Police Headquarters has reshuffled leadership at the District Police Range Kathmandu.
SSP Bishwanath Adhikari has been transferred to Police Headquarters, while SSP Ramesh Thapa has been appointed as the new Kathmandu police chief. Thapa was previously leading the Kaski District Police Office.
Thapa is the brother of media entrepreneur Rameshwar Thapa. Notably, both Annapurna Media Network and Kantipur Media Network, where Rameshwar Thapa has investments, suffered heavy damage during the recent protests.
On September 8, at least 19 people, including students, were killed in clashes with police. At least three police officers also lost their lives in the protests.
On September 9, demonstrators set fire to Parliament building, Singha Durbar, Sheetal Niwas, Baluwatar, and several central leaders’ residences from both the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML. Speculation about a leadership change in Kathmandu police had been ongoing since then.
Adhikari had also been serving as Kathmandu police chief during the March 2081 pro-monarch rally at Tinkune, which left two people dead.
