KATHMANDU: A viral social media post claiming that Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah’s ancestral home in Mahottari was vandalized has been proven false.
Fact-checking revealed that the property shown in the video actually belongs to Ram Padarath Sah Teli, a local official in Sarlahi.
The post, shared early Thursday morning by UML leader Mahesh Basnet, read, “The vandalism at Balen Shah’s house in Mahottari is a dangerous continuation of violence, arson, and destruction in the name of political interests. If victims of the Gen-Z protests harbor feelings of revenge, it will further divide society. Legal action and justice must be pursued, and I request Prime Minister Sushila Karki to address this issue.”
After fact-checking, authorities and local sources clarified that the house in question is not associated with Mayor Shah, and the viral video misrepresented the situation.
Experts warn that spreading unverified claims, particularly involving public figures, can create confusion and exacerbate social tensions.
