House committee tells govt to speed-up construction of Kalanki–Maharajgunj road

KATHMANDU: The Infrastructure Development Committee under the House of Representatives has directed the government to ensure timely completion of the Kalanki–Maharajgunj section of the Kathmandu Ring Road.

In a meeting held on Friday at Singha Durbar, the committee expressed concern over the sluggish progress of the project and instructed the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport to take prompt action to complete construction within the planned timeframe.

The committee also called for the addition of necessary infrastructure, including an underpass in the Kalanki–Maharajgunj stretch, and directed the government to swiftly complete its responsibilities related to the project.

According to committee secretary Udaya Kumar Bhandari, the committee further recommended that the entire Ring Road be upgraded to a uniform standard. It instructed the ministry to initiate the necessary budgetary and procedural steps for upgrading the Kalanki–Maharajgunj segment.

The committee also instructed the ministry to complete the construction of roads that connect two districts across the country without delay.

During the meeting, Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport, Devendra Dahal, informed that the Kalanki–Maharajgunj section is being developed with financial and technical assistance from the Chinese government.

He acknowledged that land compensation disputes in certain areas have created delays in road expansion. Minister Dahal also noted that the government is currently exploring new alternatives to address chronic traffic congestion in the Kathmandu Valley.
