KATHMANDU: With the onset of continuous monsoon rains, Kathmandu is witnessing a surge in dengue risk, prompting health authorities to issue a public advisory and ramp up preventive measures across all wards.
According to Rishi Bhusal, the focal person for epidemic disease control at the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC), the ongoing rains have created favorable breeding conditions for Aedes mosquitoes, which transmit dengue.
In response, the KMC has mobilized health workers, volunteers, and sanitation staff to eliminate stagnant water and raise awareness in schools across all 32 wards.
Residents are urged to remain especially vigilant in the mornings and evenings, when mosquito activity peaks. Symptoms of dengue include high fever, joint and muscle pain, nausea, and bleeding.
While Kathmandu has increased access to basic medications like Cetamol and oral rehydration salts through local health centers, the city stresses that preventive action—such as avoiding water accumulation and maintaining household hygiene—is essential, particularly with heavier rainfall forecast this monsoon season.
