Blood Bank service launched at Galkot Hospital

BAGLUNG: A blood transfusion service, commonly known as a ‘blood bank’, has officially been launched at Galkot Hospital in Baglung.

The service was initiated at the municipal hospital following generous contributions of equipment worth over Rs. 1.4 million from donors.

Galkot Municipality supported the initiative by investing an additional Rs. 1.5 million in infrastructure development to make the service operational.

For years, residents of western Baglung faced significant challenges due to the absence of a local blood transfusion service.

In response, Galkot Municipality, in collaboration with donors, established the service. Mayor Bharat Sharma Gaire stated that organizations such as the Shreepali Basnet Society and the Red Cross Society District Branch provided essential equipment, including medical machines, to support the launch.

“The municipality has made major investments in the health sector. In the past, residents from remote areas had to travel to cities like Pokhara or Kathmandu for basic treatment. Now, we’ve begun offering specialist services through the municipal hospital,” said Mayor Gaire.

“This blood transfusion service was a critical need, and we’ve managed to fulfill it with donor support.”

Dr. Rajesh Poudel, Chief of Galkot Municipal Hospital, noted that the hospital often receives patients requiring emergency care for obstetrics, surgeries, and major accidents. Until now, the lack of blood transfusion services forced referrals to distant cities. “This gap has finally been addressed,” he said.

Dr. Poudel added that the number of patients needing transfusions has been rising, especially women undergoing cesarean deliveries.

“Previously, we had to refer around 12 to 15 patients each month due to the lack of this service. Now, we can treat them right here,” he said.

“This facility will benefit thousands of residents from six municipalities across western Baglung.”

Galkot Hospital, established in 2079 BS, currently operates with 15 beds and offers a range of services including video X-ray, ultrasound, laboratory diagnostics, physiotherapy, eye care, outpatient services, maternity care, and autopsies, according to Dr. Poudel.
