Probe Commission to record statements of Oli and Lekhak next week

KATHMANDU: The investigation commission formed to probe the destruction and human casualties during the Gen-Z movement on September 8 and 9 is set to record statements from senior political leaders next week.

With its mandate nearing expiration, commission officials met Prime Minister Sushila Karki on Wednesday and requested an extension of the deadline.

During the meeting, commission chair Gauri Bahadur Karki said statements would be taken from former prime minister KP Sharma Oli and former home minister Ramesh Lekhak. He added that the commission has already recorded statements from heads of security agencies and is now preparing to question political leaders who were in power at the time.

Briefing on the commission’s progress, Karki said statements from all officials representing the administrative and security sectors have been completed. The commission will now focus on recording statements from senior political leaders and proceed with drafting the report.

According to Karki, preparations are underway to summon political leaders for statements starting Sunday. He also said that the commission would require additional time under its revised terms of reference, as the remaining time would be insufficient to complete the report after recording statements from Oli, Lekhak, and others.

Karki informed the prime minister that further work is needed on issues related to jurisdiction as per the agreement with the Gen-Z group, making a deadline extension necessary.
