RSP chair Lamichhane, RPP parliamentary leader Shahi hold meeting

KATHMANDU: Chair of the Rastriya Swatantra Party, Rabi Lamichhane, held a meeting with parliamentary party leader of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party, Gyanendra Shahi, on Saturday.

The meeting, held at Lamichhane’s residence, lasted for about an hour and has drawn attention in political circles. It is being viewed by some as a significant discussion amid ongoing political developments.

According to sources, the two leaders discussed possible cooperation regarding the post of deputy speaker in the House of Representatives, parliamentary strategy, and future political direction.

The talks come after the Rastriya Swatantra Party successfully elected DP Aryal as Speaker of the House of Representatives. The focus of the discussion was reportedly on how to move forward regarding the deputy speaker’s position.

As the constitution requires the Speaker and Deputy Speaker to be from different political parties, the RSP is seen needing support from other parties in the opposition to fill the post. In this context, the dialogue with the RPP is being viewed as a strategic move.

Political analysts say potential cooperation between the RSP and the RPP could influence the balance of power in Parliament. If the two parties reach an understanding on the deputy speaker’s election process, it could signal the emergence of a new political alignment.

Sources said the meeting was not merely formal but focused on possible decisions, including support for the deputy speaker position, parliamentary cooperation, and discussions about potential future alliances. However, both sides have yet to publicly disclose detailed outcomes of the meeting.
