Chemical fertilizers arrive via Kolkata port: STC

KATHMANDU: The Salt Trading Corporation Limited (STC) has announced that a large consignment of chemical fertilizers imported through India’s Kolkata port has started arriving in Nepal, with distribution already underway across provinces.

According to the STC, a total of 1.52 million sacks of fertilizers have been received at the port, including 440,000 sacks of urea and 1.08 million sacks of diammonium phosphate (DAP). The fertilizers are being transported to Nepal-based warehouses for distribution.

In a statement issued Friday, the Corporation said it has already circulated quota allocations to provincial governments, which have in turn informed municipalities of their respective shares. Distribution will be carried out through registered fertilizer dealers in coordination with municipal authorities.

“All dealers registered as fertilizer sellers with the corporation are requested to coordinate with their municipalities and relevant STC offices to distribute fertilizers according to the quotas,” the statement read.

The Corporation also addressed reports circulating in the media and on social media about shortages of fertilizers in the market. It said its attention had been drawn to such claims and clarified that fertilizers were in the process of being dispatched from warehouses based on the quotas set.

The timely supply of fertilizers remains a sensitive issue in Nepal, particularly during the planting season, when farmers frequently face shortages that disrupt agricultural productivity.
