Secretariat claims Deepak Khadka detained without arrest warrant

KATHMANDU: The secretariat of Nepali Congress leader and former Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Deepak Khadka has objected to his arrest, claiming he was detained without an arrest warrant.

According to the secretariat, Khadka was taken into custody by officials from the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) at around 8:00 am on Sunday on the pretext of questioning, without prior notice or a warrant.

The secretariat stated that detaining him without information and an arrest warrant is against the law. It added that details about the case only became known after Home Minister Sudan Gurung later made the arrest warrant public via social media.

Alleging political vendetta, the secretariat claimed there was an attempt to defame Khadka through false accusations and character assassination.

“Deepak Khadka is an open book and is ready to fully cooperate with any legal investigation carried out by the state,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, the government has clarified that Khadka was detained for questioning under money laundering laws in connection with cash recovered on September 9, 2025.

However, his secretariat insists that he has not been arrested on any criminal charge.

The secretariat has urged media outlets to report responsibly, warning against exaggeration and misinformation, and reaffirmed Khadka’s commitment to cooperate with lawful investigations.
