‘Bio Sand Filters’ distributed to ensure clean drinking water in Khotang

KHOTANG: In a bid to provide access to safe drinking water, ‘Bio Sand Filters’ have been distributed to the residents of Pipchahi in Chyasmitar, Halesi Tuwachung Municipality-3 in Nepal’s Khotang district.

Though the village has access to piped water, contamination at the source had forced locals to consume unsafe water.

Ward Chair Bhupal Singh Rai said the filters were distributed under the “One House, One Filter” initiative, launched with financial support from the municipality and technical assistance from Waste Water Company Limited. A total of 26 households have now received the filters free of cost.

The demand for filters arose after water supplied from Dhami Khola, located about 800 meters from the village, was found to be contaminated. Mayor Bimala Rai said the initiative aligns with the municipality’s commitment to ensuring clean drinking water for all. “The water in the stream was found to be highly polluted, causing frequent illnesses among residents,” she said.

“With these filters, families will now have access to clean water for the next 20 years.”

A similar water filter has also been installed at the local Bal Bikas Primary School to provide safe drinking water for students.
