Government urges teachers to return to work
The government has called on teachers to end their protests and return to work, assuring them that their concerns will be addressed appropriately.
At a press briefing on Wednesday to share Cabinet decisions, government spokesperson Prithvi Subba Gurung said the government remains sensitive to the demands raised by the Nepal Teachers’ Federation and urged teachers to resume their duties.
He stated that the government has decided to facilitate the swift passage of the School Education Bill, currently under parliamentary review, and will coordinate with other political parties to pass it through a fast-track process as requested by the teachers.
Task force formed to review seats and fees of medical colleges
The 18th meeting of the Medical Education Commission chaired by Prime Minister and Chair of the Medical Education Commission KP Sharma Oli today formed an 11-member taskforce to review the number of MBBS and BDS seats in private medical colleges and the fee structure.
Secretary at the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Dr Deepak Kafle, is assigned the coordinator of the taskforce and it has been asked to submit suggestions within 10 days.
The Commission’s meeting was held at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers in Singha Durbar.
Maoist Centre resumes Tarai-Madhesh awareness campaign
The CPN (Maoist Centre) has resumed its Tarai-Madhesh Awareness Campaign, focusing on areas along the Hulaki Highway.
As part of the initiative, various programs were organized today in several locations across West Nawalparasi.
According to Mohan Sapkota, district chair of YCL West Nawalparasi, participants began the day with a six-kilometre morning walk.
Party chair and former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ also joined the walk, which started from Bardghat-4 and concluded at the Shahid Smriti Community Hospital in Bardghat-14, where he laid a wreath at the statue of martyr Surya Bikram Thapa.
UML presents its suggestions on upcoming policies and programmes to PM Oli
The ruling party CPN (UML) today submitted to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli its thematic suggestions for the policy, programmes and budget for the upcoming fiscal year.
UML General Secretary Shanker Pokhrel and other leaders handed over the Suggestion Letter to Prime Minister and party chair Oli at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers in Singha Durbar today.
General Secretary Pokhrel shared that although the UML had made such suggestions after Oli’s appointment as the Prime Minister, the suggestion letter was given again with the fresh account as the policies, programmes and budget had already been presented by the previous government at that time.
ICC U-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup Asia Qualifier: Nepal defeats Hong Kong
Nepal has registered its third win under the ICC U-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup Asia Qualifier.
In today’s match, Nepal defeated Hong Kong by nine wickets to register their third win in the ongoing tournament.
Nepal secured the target of 116 runs set by Hong Kong in 12.3 overs at the loss of one wicket.
RSP central committee meeting scheduled for Thursday
The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) is set to hold its central committee meeting on Thursday.
Acting Chairperson DP Aryal has called the meeting, which will take place at the party’s central office at 3 pm.
According to Acting Spokesperson Manish Jha, the meeting will focus on reviewing recent political developments, planning upcoming party activities, and hearing reports from members.
KMC takes action against city police after viral video incident
Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has taken disciplinary action after a video showing alleged harassment of a garbage collector by municipal police went viral on social media on Wednesday morning.
The incident reportedly took place at 8 a.m. in the Baluwatar area of Ward No. 4, where municipal police personnel were seen confronting a garbage collector riding a bicycle.
In response, KMC has dismissed the officers involved in the incident, citing unprofessional behavior.
Teachers to continue protest until govt fulfils demands
Teachers across Nepal have continued their agitation, demanding the immediate promulgation of the School Education Act based on prior agreements with the government.
Led by the Nepal Teachers Federation, teachers staged a sit-in protest on Wednesday, marching from their homes to Baneshwor, reiterating their stance that they will not return to work until the bill is passed.
In response to the ongoing protests, the Council of Ministers held a meeting late Tuesday night and decided to recommend summoning a session of the Federal Parliament on April 24 to expedite the passage of the School Education Bill.
KMC Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol visits EU’s Court of Justice
Deputy Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Sunita Dangol, is currently on an official visit to Europe, where she reached the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) in Luxembourg to exchange experiences related to local-level dispute resolution mechanisms.
During her visit, Dangol shared how Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has adopted fast, fair, and accessible systems to resolve disputes at the local level. She emphasized Nepal’s evolving judicial practices at the municipal level, particularly highlighting the role of the judicial committee led by the deputy chief.
“I shared my experience on how we have assimilated a judicial system that ensures easy access to justice for all—anchored in fairness, impartiality, and equality,” said Dangol. “We also had discussions about how the CJEU handles cases—its registration process, decision-making timeline, and courtroom procedures.”
Home Minister orders investigation into woman’s death in Siraha
Minister for Home Affairs Ramesh Lekhak has directed the police administration to conduct an investigation to find the facts and truth in connection with the death of 24-year-old Anandi Devi Sadaya of Jagatpur, Nawarajpur rural municipality-3 in Siraha district.
Sadaya, who was sexually assaulted some four months ago, was found dead at her home on Tuesday.
Home Minister Lekhak expressed serious concern over the incident and called Inspector General of Police Deepak Thapa, directing him to investigate the facts regarding the incident, according to the Home Ministry Secretariat.
Sadaya was sexually assaulted by Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, 22, and Shyam Sundar Yadav, 32, of Bariyarpatti rural municipality-1 in Siraha on December 24, 2024, when she had gone there to meet her older sister, according to District Police Office Siraha Chief and Superintendent of Police Anantaram Sharma.
President summons parliament meeting for April 25
President Ram Chandra Paudel has summoned a meeting of the Federal Parliament for 1:00 pm on April 25.
The decision follows a recommendation made by the Council of Ministers during its meeting held yesterday.
The upcoming session will bring together both the House of Representatives and the National Assembly.
Madhesh CM calls for calm amid tensions in Birgunj
Madhesh Pradesh Chief Minister Satish Kumar Singh has called for peace, tolerance, and social harmony following unrest in Birgunj triggered by incidents during a Hanuman Jayanti procession.
In a press statement issued through his Press Advisor Anil Kumar Karna, the Chief Minister emphasized that the administration and police are in constant communication with all concerned parties to ensure public safety and restore normalcy. The statement condemned the acts of violence and tension instigated during the religious procession and vowed to bring those responsible to justice.
“Peace and tolerance can only be preserved through mutual respect and brotherhood among all religious, cultural, and ethnic communities,” the statement said. It added that the police have been directed to investigate and take action against anyone involved in spreading communal unrest.
NC holding Central Committee meeting on April 30
Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has called a meeting of the party’s Central Working Committee.
The meeting has been scheduled for Baisakh 17 (April 30) at the party’s central office in Sanepa.
General Secretary Krishna Prasad Paudel issued a notice on Tuesday, urging all office bearers, members, and invited members of the Central Working Committee to attend the meeting.
Nepal attracts over Rs 57 billion in foreign investment commitments
Nepal has received foreign investment commitments totaling Rs 57.97 billion in the first nine months of the current fiscal year, according to data from the Department of Industry.
Out of the total, Rs 2.89 billion came through the automatic route, while the remaining was channeled via the manual route.
During this period, foreign investors also received approval to purchase shares worth Rs 1.94 billion from 32 different companies and to transfer technology into Nepal.
Gold price hits all-time high, surges by Rs 2,700 today
Gold prices have reached a record high in Nepal, climbing by a staggering Rs 2,700 in a single day.
On Wednesday, gold is being traded at Rs 187,000 per tola, the highest rate ever recorded.
According to the Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers Federation, the price had stood at Rs 184,300 per tola on Tuesday.
Bandipur welcomes over 200,000 tourists in a year
More than 210,000 tourists visited Bandipur in Tanahun during the year 2081 BS (April 13, 2024 – April 13, 2025), according to the Bandipur Visit Year Secretariat.
This included 60,000 international visitors and 150,000 domestic travelers.
Following the launch of the Bandipur Visit Year campaign on January 1, 2025, initiatives such as infrastructure upgrades, data collection, and classification of tourism service providers have been implemented.
Govt responds to MP Gautam’s query on shipping office budget, work progress
The Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport has provided a detailed response to questions raised by Rashtriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Sobita Gautam regarding the functionality and expenditure of Nepal’s Shipping Office.
MP Gautam had questioned the rationale behind allocating approximately Rs 700 million over six fiscal years to the Shipping Office, asking what tangible work had been accomplished during this period, and why the office was established in the absence of a legal framework—suggesting the possibility of corruption.
In reply, Transport Minister Devendra Dahal said that the office has made progress in several areas. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) and Initial Environmental Examination (IEE) have been completed for a terminal on the Narayani River, while a DPR has also been prepared for a terminal on the Koshi River.
