Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police to enforce horn ban through public awareness campaign

KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office is gearing up to enforce the rule against unnecessary honking within the valley as part of its ongoing efforts to reduce noise pollution and improve traffic management.

During a discussion held on Thursday between the Traffic Police Office, the Federation of Nepali Transport Entrepreneurs, and the Workers’ Trade Union, Senior Superintendent of Police Binod Ghimire, Chief of the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office, confirmed that the long-delayed “No Horn Please” campaign will now be fully implemented.

Although the campaign was originally launched in 2016, its enforcement has been lacking, leading to continued challenges with noise pollution caused by excessive honking in the valley.

However, Ghimire said the rule will now be actively enforced, accompanied by public awareness programs to educate both drivers and passengers on the importance of reducing unnecessary honking.

In addition to the enforcement efforts, Ghimire also called on transport entrepreneurs to take an active role in improving public transportation services, particularly by organizing public transport effectively and providing better services to commuters.

Saroj Sitaula, Senior Vice President of the Federation of Nepali Transport Entrepreneurs, highlighted that while there have been improvements across various sectors in Nepal, the transport sector has been largely neglected by the state.

He pointed out that despite the introduction of the express bus service between Bhaktapur and Kathmandu, operational challenges persist due to inadequate infrastructure.

Sitaula stressed the need for dedicated lanes for buses to help improve the efficiency of public transportation.
