Consumer Protection Department inspects 14 firms in Kathmandu, fines one Rs 5,000



KATHMANDU: The Department of Commerce, Supplies and Consumer Protection on Sunday conducted inspections of 14 industries and firms across Kathmandu, bringing two of them under punitive action, according to a statement issued by the department.

Among those penalised, Dahal Gai Farm located at Kageshwori Manohara–9, Mahanatar, was fined Rs 5,000 for violating provisions of the Consumer Protection Act, 2018. The department said action was taken under Sections 15 and 38 of the Act, in line with Section 39.

Similarly, DNS Kastha and Furniture Industry operating at Kageshwori Manohara–9, Gothatar, has been instructed to appear at the department within three days with all business-related documents. The department did not disclose the specific nature of the alleged irregularities but said the firm would be investigated further.

The remaining 12 industries and firms inspected on the day were issued directives along with suggestions for immediate corrective measures, the statement added.

The department said it has been carrying out regular market monitoring and inspections nationwide, except on public holidays, in coordination with local administrations. These inspections are aimed at ensuring market hygiene, enforcing the issuance of bills and invoices, and curbing black marketing.

According to the department’s recent records, 11 industries and firms were monitored on December 12, while inspections were carried out at 20 industries and firms on December 11. On that day, Dawa Shoes and Fashion Center was fined Rs 50,000 for violations of consumer protection regulations.

Likewise, inspections were conducted at 13 firms on December 10, during which four firms were fined Rs 50,000 each. On December 9, the department monitored 15 firms, followed by inspections at another 15 firms on December 8, when three firms were fined Rs 50,000 each.

The department reiterated that such monitoring efforts will continue in order to protect consumer rights and maintain fair trade practices in the market.
