Speaker Ghimire holding talks with parties on HoR reinstatement

KATHMANDU: Speaker of the dissolved House of Representatives (HoR), Devraj Ghimire, is convening a meeting of 10 political parties today to discuss the possible reinstatement of Parliament.

Ghimire has invited representatives from the Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, Maoist Centre, Rastriya Swatantra Party, Rastriya Prajatantra Party, Unified Socialist, Janamat Party, Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal, Janata Samajwadi Party, and Nagarik Unmukti Party to participate in the discussion.

The meeting comes in the wake of 10 separate writ petitions filed at the Supreme Court on Tuesday, challenging both the dissolution of the House and the formation of the interim government.

Following the petitions, Speaker Ghimire has reportedly stepped up efforts to consult with key political actors. He is also scheduled to meet with legal experts on Thursday to gather further input.

On September 12, President Ram Chandra Paudel appointed Sushila Karki—who is not a sitting member of Parliament—as Prime Minister. Immediately after her appointment, Karki recommended the dissolution of the House of Representatives.

Legal professionals have filed petitions at the Supreme Court, arguing that both Karki’s appointment and the subsequent dissolution of Parliament are unconstitutional.

Although the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML have publicly opposed the dissolution, they have not filed separate petitions. On Tuesday, Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba publicly declared the dissolution to be unconstitutional.
