Three newly appointed ministers take oath of office

Three newly appointed ministers have officially taken the oath of office and secrecy at a special ceremony held at the President’s residence, Sheetal Niwas. President Ram Chandra Paudel administered the oath to Kulman Ghising as Minister for Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation; Om Prakash Aryal as Minister for Home and Law; and Rameshore Khanal as Minister for Finance.

Gen-Z protest victims to be declared martyrs, families to receive Rs 1.5 million each

The interim government led by Sushila Karki has decided to provide Rs 1.5 million each to the families of those who lost their lives during the Gen-Z protests on September 08 and 09. Monday’s Cabinet meeting decided to declare the deceased as martyrs and to conduct their funerals with national honors.

Speaker Ghimire boycotts oath-taking ceremony of new ministers

Speaker of the House, Dev Raj Ghimire, boycotted the oath-taking ceremony of newly appointed ministers of the interim government held on Monday at Sheetal Niwas. However, National Assembly Chairperson Narayan Prasad Dahal attended the ceremony.

Minister Ghising to donate salary and perks to fund for Gen-Z movement martyrs

Newly appointed Minister for Energy, Physical Infrastructure and Urban Development, Kulman Ghising, has announced that he will donate all his ministerial salary, allowances, and perks to a fund established in the name of those who lost their lives during the Gen-Z movement. Speaking after assuming office at Singha Durbar on Monday, Ghising said he had taken on the role under extraordinary circumstances and therefore did not wish to personally benefit from it.

Home Minister Aryal announces relief for Gen-Z protest victims

Newly appointed Home and Law Minister Om Prakash Aryal assumed office at Singha Durbar on Monday, shortly after being sworn in at Sheetal Niwas. Upon taking charge, Minister Aryal announced immediate relief for families of those killed during the Gen-Z protests on September 8 and 9. Each of the 72 bereaved families will receive Rs 100,000 to support funeral expenses.

Government declares public holiday on September 17 for national mourning

The government has decided to observe National Mourning Day on  September 17 (Ashwin 1). Monday’s Cabinet meeting decided to mark the day with a nationwide holiday, Law Minister Om Prakash Aryal said.

PM Karki calls first Cabinet meeting at 4:30 PM

Prime Minister of the interim government Sushila Karki has called the first meeting of the newly formed Cabinet today, following the appointment of three ministers. The meeting will take place at Singha Durbar at 4:30 PM. Prior to the meeting, ministers and secretaries from the respective ministries are expected to prepare and review the agenda items.

New Energy Minister Kulman Ghising visits injured protesters at TU Teaching Hospital

Shortly after taking the oath of office at the President’s residence, newly appointed Minister for Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation, Kulman Ghising, visited victims injured during the Gen-Z protests at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, Maharajgunj. Before officially assuming his ministerial duties, Ghising personally met with those undergoing treatment for injuries sustained during the protests, demonstrating solidarity and concern for the affected individuals.

Sher Bahadur Deuba’s health showing improvement after assault

Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba is reportedly recovering well after sustaining injuries during a violent attack amid the Gen-Z protests. Deuba is receiving treatment at a hospital in Kathmandu. Concern for his health has been widespread among party leaders and supporters. Min Bishwakarma, head of the party’s Information, Communication, and Publicity Department, confirmed that Deuba’s condition is improving.

Damaged structures to be repainted before Dashain

Minister for Urban Development Kulman Ghising has announced that buildings damaged by arson will be repainted before Dashain. Addressing the ministry after assuming office today, he said immediate repainting will be carried out, followed by the management of essential items such as furniture.

Ncell files police complaint over arson and looting during Gen-Z protest

Ncell has lodged a formal complaint with the Kathmandu District Police Office over the large-scale vandalism, arson, and looting that took place at its headquarters in Lainchaur on September 9, during the Gen-Z protests. In the complaint filed on Monday, the company stated that its property had suffered extensive damage and requested authorities to arrest those involved, carry out necessary investigations, prosecute them under the law, and recover stolen items. Ncell has also sought compensation for losses caused by the arson.

Postmortem completed on 28 bodies of Gen-Z protest victims at TU Teaching Hospital

The forensic department at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, Maharajgunj, has completed autopsies on 28 bodies of individuals who lost their lives during the recent Gen-Z protests. According to Dr. Gopal Chaudhary, head of the forensic unit, the hospital has so far received 46 bodies for examination. Of these, 23 have already been identified and handed over to relatives, while seven remain unidentifiable and will require DNA testing for confirmation. In such cases, dental records and fingerprint analysis are also used to aid identification.

Movie theatres across Nepal to reopen today

Movie theatres across Nepal, which had remained closed following the recent youth-led “Gen Z” protests, will reopen from today, the Nepal Film Association announced on Sunday. A meeting of the umbrella body of cinema hall operators and film distributors decided to resume operations while prioritizing the safety of audiences and movie halls.

Engineers’ association to offer free technical assistance for reconstruction

The Nepal Engineers’ Association (NEA), the umbrella organization of the country’s engineers, has announced that it will provide free technical assistance for damage assessment and reconstruction following the destruction caused during the Gen-Z protests. In a press statement, NEA General Secretary Binod Prakash Pandit said the association’s members would contribute their expertise without charge to support both the evaluation of damaged infrastructure and subsequent rebuilding efforts.

Nepal Airlines to start direct flights to Guangzhou

Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC), the national flag carrier, has announced it will begin direct flights on the Kathmandu–Guangzhou–Kathmandu route. According to the airline, the service will initially be operated as a promotional flight. Currently, China Southern Airlines is running regular flights on the same route, while Himalaya Airlines also operates scheduled flights between Kathmandu and China.

Gold and silver prices up

Prices of gold and silver in the Nepali market recorded a slight increase on Monday, according to the Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers’ Association. The price of gold rose by Rs 100 per tola compared to the previous day, reaching Rs 215,200 per tola. On Sunday, gold had been traded at Rs 215,100 per tola.

Nepal announces Squad for Unity Cup T20I series against West Indies

­The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has announced the final squad for the upcoming Unity Cup T20I series against the West Indies, scheduled to be held in the UAE in the last week of September. Mohammad Aadil Alam and Sundeep Jora have made their return to the national side. Ansari has been included for the first time since 2022, while Jora is back in the squad for the first time since the 2024 T20 World Cup. Both players earned their place following impressive performances for Nepal A in the recent five-match T20 series in Assam, India.

Water Ministry resumes normal operations after Gen-Z protests

The Ministry of Water Supply has resumed regular operations after being temporarily disrupted due to the Gen-Z protests and associated arson. Deputy Secretary Rambabu Puri confirmed that all activities at the ministry and its subordinate agencies are back to normal. “Operations were suspended from September 8 to September 12 due to the Gen-Z protests. With the situation now stabilizing, work has resumed today,” he said.

Energy Minister Ghising orders collection of unpaid dedicated trunkline dues

Newly appointed Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Kulman Ghising, has directed the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) to immediately begin collecting long-overdue payments from dedicated trunkline users. The directive, issued as Ghising’s very first decision after assuming office on Monday, marks a shift in policy. During his earlier tenure as NEA’s executive director, successive governments had not allowed the authority to collect these arrears.

Rameshore Khanal takes charge of Finance Ministry during national crisis

Following the fall of the KP Sharma Oli-led government in the wake of the Gen-Z protests on September 8 and 9, former Chief Justice Sushila Karki has formed a three-member interim Cabinet. Among the key appointments, seasoned economist and former finance secretary Rameshore Khanal has been entrusted with the Ministry of Finance.

Parliament Secretariat asks people to return of items taken during Gen-Z protest

The Federal Parliament Secretariat has appealed for the return of materials taken during the Gen-Z protest on September 9, when demonstrators set fire to parts of the Parliament building in New Baneshwor. Issuing a public notice on Monday, the Secretariat called on individuals to return any items that may be in their possession, or to provide information about the whereabouts of such property.

Small businesses and liquor shops in Thamel asked to close by 10 pm

The Thamel Tourism Development Council has decided that liquor shops, pushcarts, and small roadside businesses in Thamel will only be allowed to operate until 10 pm, citing rising security concerns in the area. Acting General Secretary of the Council, Punyaram Lageju, said the decision was made following a surge in thefts, robberies, and crowd-related disturbances during late-night hours.

Ncell extends free local voice, SMS, and internet services until Friday

Telecom service provider Ncell has extended the duration of its free local voice, SMS, and internet services, which were initially launched on Tuesday. The company announced that customers can now enjoy these free services until Friday.

Janamat Party suspends Central Secretary BP Sah amid ongoing rape investigation

Janamat Party has suspended its Central Secretary Bisheshwar Prasad (BP) Sah from both his party secretary position and general membership pending completion of a rape investigation. The decision was announced Monday by Engineer Narayan Prasad Chaudhary, coordinator of the party’s Central Disciplinary Committee. According to a letter issued by the committee, a case of sexual assault was filed against Sah on April 13, and the Dhanusha District Police Office issued a notice regarding the case on August 21.

Pokharel appeals to UML cadres to reconstruct offices destroyed in protests

CPN-UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel on Monday visited the party’s central office in Chyasal, Lalitpur, for the first time since last week’s Gen-Z protests left the premises badly damaged. Addressing party cadres during his visit, Pokharel appealed to UML members nationwide to begin reconstruction of offices and structures destroyed during the demonstrations. He also instructed leaders and activists to coordinate with government agencies to contribute to rebuilding public infrastructure affected by the unrest.

Department of Health Services in Teku escapes damage during Gen-Z protest

Widespread arson during the recent Gen-Z protests destroyed government offices across the country, and the Ministry of Health and Population was among the hardest hit. One of the ministry’s key bodies, the Department of Health Services in Teku, however, narrowly escaped major damage, allowing it to resume regular operations from Sunday. Director General Dr. Tanka Prasad Barakoti confirmed that while the department’s building remained intact, one government vehicle and a motorcycle stationed at the Health Ministry were damaged.
