CIB investigates alleged egg extraction from underage girls at Kathmandu fertility clinic

KATHMANDU: The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police has launched a probe into serious allegations that Hope Fertility and Diagnostic, located in Babarmahal, Kathmandu, extracted and sold eggs from two underage girls.

The investigation began following complaints filed by the guardians of the victims. Based on the report, five individuals associated with the clinic were detained on Sunday and Monday for initial questioning, and later released on bail.

According to CIB spokesperson SP Yubaraj Khadka, the individuals are currently under investigation on a mandatory attendance basis.

Preliminary findings suggest that the clinic brought in girls under the age of 18 and extracted their eggs using hormone injections.

The victims told CIB investigators that they were administered injections for 10 consecutive days. After the ovarian stimulation, the eggs were surgically retrieved and stored, reportedly without informed consent or proper medical oversight.

CIB reports that the girls were each paid between Rs 10,000 and Rs 15,000 for the procedure, raising serious concerns about the exploitation of minors and violations of medical ethics and human rights.

The bureau is now gathering further evidence to determine if the clinic engaged in illegal egg trade and violated laws protecting minors. Authorities are also investigating potential breaches of the National Health Professional Council’s standards and reproductive health regulations.
