Madhyapur Thimi comes alive with colorful Sindur Jatra

BHAKTAPUR: The vibrant Sindur Jatra featuring 32 khats (palanquin) is being celebrated with great enthusiasm in Madhyapur Thimi, Bhaktapur, on Tuesday.

Among the various festivals observed exclusively in Madhyapur Thimi during Bisket Jatra, the Sindur Jatra with 32 khats stands out as one of the most prominent.

During the Jatra, lamps are placed on the khat (palanquin) of the main deity, accompanied by traditional Dhime Baja music.

As the procession moves through every chowk, crossroads, house, and neighborhood, locals shower vermilion powder from windows, rooftops, and balconies to welcome the participants.

The festival gets its name, Sindur Jatra (Vermilion Festival), from the tradition of participants playing instruments like Kaya Baja, Bhusya Baja, and Dhime Baja while carrying the deity’s khat, applying vermilion to one another, and joyfully throwing it in the air.

Locals of Thimi take the Balkumari deity on a procession through the streets, marking the celebration with spirited vermilion play, dancing, and the rhythmic beats of Newari musical instruments.
