External support essential to address climate crisis: Minister Thakuri

KATHMANDU: Minister for Forests and Environment, Ain Bahadur Shahi Thakuri, has emphasized the significant impacts of climate change on Nepal and stressed the necessity of external aid to mitigate its effects.

In his address at a reception hosted by the Nepali Embassy in London on Friday evening, the Minister highlighted that climate change has affected key sectors in Nepal, including agriculture and tourism.

He called for continued cooperation from development partners, particularly the United Kingdom, to address these challenges.

Minister Thakuri pointed out that the reduction of climate change impacts and biodiversity conservation are global concerns, not limited to Nepal, and underscored the importance of strengthening Nepal-UK relations.

According to the Minister’s Private Secretariat, he also noted that the Nepal-UK relationship has been bolstered by the historical contribution of the Gurkha military force.

The Minister further shared that recent reforms in Nepal, including a new ordinance, have been designed to encourage foreign investment.

He urged Nepali-origin people in the UK to play a key role in mobilizing capital for industrial development in Nepal.

Ambassador Chandra Kumar Ghimire spoke about the long-standing diplomatic ties between Nepal and the UK, reaffirming their commitment to promoting mutual interests and benefits.
