BRI an opportunity for Nepal’s development: Jhalanath Khanal

KATHMANDU: Former Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal has said the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) presents a significant opportunity for Nepal to achieve development and prosperity.

Speaking at a program organized by the Foundation for Peace, Development and Socialism in Kathmandu on Saturday, Khanal described the BRI as a global development project that should be embraced as a means to boost infrastructure and communication networks.

Addressing concerns that BRI could become a debt trap, Khanal said the initiative has proven beneficial for most countries worldwide. He argued that Nepal should seize the potential of BRI to advance its economic growth and modernize its infrastructure.

Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Cheng Song also addressed the event, affirming China’s positive stance on Nepal’s development initiatives. Highlighting China’s position as a major global trading center, Ambassador Cheng said that China has made remarkable progress in infrastructure, information technology, and industrialization through the BRI.

He pointed out that China has become the world’s largest producer of electric vehicles and emphasized that there is no reason to harbor doubts about the BRI’s intentions or outcomes. The program featured discussions on the implementation of BRI in Nepal, focusing on its opportunities and challenges.
