Prime Minister Karki assumes office
Newly appointed Prime Minister Sushila Karki officially assumed office at Singha Durbar on Sunday. Prior to taking office, Karki visited Launchaur, where she paid tribute to a martyr by laying a wreath at the statue. Karki was sworn in on Friday evening, backed by the momentum of the Gen-Z movement. She is expected to announce a small-sized cabinet later today.
Govt confirms 72 deaths in Gen-Z protests
The Government of Nepal has confirmed that 72 people lost their lives during the recent Gen Z-led protests.Chief Secretary Eknarayan Aryal disclosed the figure during the swearing-in of newly appointed Prime Minister Sushila Karki.
Nation’s most vital institutions targeted, I’m ashamed: PM
Prime Minister (PM) Sushila Karki has expressed deep concern over the recent attacks on the country’s key institutions during the Gen-Z movement, calling the destruction “shameful” and “unprecedented.”Speaking after assuming office at Singha Durbar on Sunday, Prime Minister Karki said, “The country’s most essential institutions have been targeted. The police, who are responsible for ensuring public security, were attacked. Police posts and stations were burned down. Court files were destroyed. Critical documents that belonged to the nation are gone.”
PM Karki instructs officials to act in line with youth aspirations
Newly appointed Prime Minister Sushila Karki has called on top government officials to work with determination to end corruption, ensure good governance, and promote economic equality—reflecting the aspirations of the nation’s youth.While addressing senior civil servants after assuming office at Singha Durbar on Sunday, Prime Minister Karki emphasized that she had not come to enjoy the privileges of power, but to fulfill the responsibilities entrusted to her by the youth.
Clashes erupt at Sudhan Gurung’s press conference; claims of infiltration and assault
Tensions have flared at a press conference by Sudhan Gurung, coordinator of “Hami Nepal,” when Gen-Z youth and journalists confronted him at the Reporters’ Club in Kathmandu on Sunday. Angry youths accused Gurung of failing to secure enough achievements despite the loss of nearly 70 lives during the protests. Some even climbed onto the stage, forcing Reporters’ Club chair Rishi Dhamala to intervene and shield Gurung.
Govt decides to form high-level committee for festival transport management
The government has decided to establish a high-level Transport Management Committee aimed at ensuring safe and comfortable travel for passengers during festivals, especially given the current challenging situation. The committee is also tasked to promptly address transport-related complaints. In a meeting held today, six key decisions were made, including the formation of this committee under the coordination of the Director General of the Department of Transport Management, said Keshav Kumar Sharma, Secretary at the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport.
3,723 escaped prisoners rearrested across the country
A total of 3,723 escaped prisoners have been rearrested following the mass jailbreaks that occurred during the violent Gen-Z protests on September 8 and 9, according to Nepal Police. Speaking at a press briefing, Nepal Police Central Spokesperson and Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Binod Ghimire confirmed that 3,723 inmates have been taken back into custody as of noon today.
SC resumes services under tents after arson attack
The Supreme Court has resumed operations from Sunday by setting up tents in its premises after its main building was destroyed in arson and vandalism during the Gen-Z protests. According to the court, services such as case information, rescheduling of hearings, registration of writ petitions, and habeas corpus petitions have restarted. However, regular hearings cannot yet be held, and the court is currently limited to rescheduling pending cases.
Nepal Rastra Bank begins distribution of banknotes
Nepal Rastra Bank has started distributing banknotes ahead of the Dashain festival. People were seen exchanging notes at the central bank’s Thapathali office in Kathmandu. However, participation was relatively lower this year due to the country’s current situation.
Urban Development Ministry to prepare details of losses from Gen-Z protest within three days
The Ministry of Urban Development is to prepare the details of losses of physical structures, vehicles as well as other things caused due to arson and vandalism occurred during the recent Gen-Z protests within three days. A meeting of the Ministry held under coordination of Ministry Secretary Gopal Prasad Sigdel at the Ministry today decided to collect the details of the damages caused by vandalism and arson occurred in course of Gen-Z protest on September 9.
Health Ministry to resume services from NHRC building
The building housing Ministry of Health and Population at Ramshah Path turned into ashes following arson attack during the demonstration and protest of Gen-Z. Following the incident, the ministry is preparing to resume its services from the Nepal Health Research Council (NHRC) building. Although the old NHRC building located in the ministry premises suffered partial damage, the new building remains intact. Along with the four-story building of the Ministry of Health, furniture, important documents and files, computers, as well as vehicles in the premises have been completely burned and destroyed.
Sumana Shrestha quits Rastriya Swatantra Party
Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Sumana Shrestha has quit the party, according to a leader close to her. Sumana Shrestha issued a strong statement following her decision to leave the party, criticizing the party’s internal practices and leadership. “Never admitting mistakes—making one after another, and expecting everyone in the party to bear the burden!” she said.
Gen-Z movement victims to be declared martyrs; families to receive Rs 1 million
The government has decided to declare those who lost their lives during the Gen-Z movement as martyrs. In addition, the interim government will provide Rs 1 million in compensation to the families of the deceased. The government has also pledged to ensure medical treatment for those injured during the protests.
Nepal Rastra Bank to invest Rs 1.2 billion in fixed deposits
Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has announced plans to invest Rs 1.2 billion in fixed deposits across banks and financial institutions. The investment will be made from the central bank’s gratuity and pension fund, which requires proper allocation. To that end, NRB has invited eligible banks and financial institutions to submit their applications by September 15. According to the notice, Rs 1.04 billion will be invested in ‘A-Class’ commercial banks, Rs 195 million in ‘B-Class’ development banks, and Rs 65 million in ‘C-Class’ finance companies.
U.S. expresses readiness to work with Nepal’s interim govt
The U.S. Embassy in Nepal has welcomed the restoration of calm and a peaceful resolution to last week’s unrest, expressing its readiness to work with Nepal’s interim government in the months ahead as it prepares for new elections. In a statement issued on Sunday, the Embassy commended President Ram Chandra Paudel and youth leaders for their commitment to a democratic solution, saying, “We continue to mourn with Nepal over its losses.”
Resham Chaudhary quits NUP, announces ‘NUP Nepal’
Resham Lal Chaudhary, patron of the Nagarik Unmukti Party (NUP), has officially parted ways with the party and announced the formation of a new political outfit—Nagarik Unmukti Party Nepal. Chaudhary made the announcement via a Facebook Live broadcast on Sunday morning. In his address, he confirmed both his departure from the existing NUP and the launch of the new political group.
China congratulates Prime Minister Karki, pledges support
China, Nepal’s northern neighbor, has extended congratulations to newly appointed Prime Minister Sushila Karki. At a regular press briefing in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian responded to journalists’ questions by congratulating Karki on her appointment. When asked about China’s stance on the appointment of former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as head of Nepal’s interim government on September 12, Lin said, “China congratulates Prime Minister Karki on her new role.”
Prime Minister’s Office at Singha Durbar reduced to ruins
The Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers at Singha Durbar now lies in ruins following the Gen-Z protests and subsequent arson on Bhadra 23. The historic administrative complex, which had already suffered heavy damage during the 1973 fire and the 2015 Gorkha earthquake before being retrofitted and reused, has once again been devastated.
Federal parliament secretariat collecting details of loss
The federal parliament secretariat has begun collecting details on the damages of the House of Representatives and the National Assembly buildings. The parliament buildings and the furniture and equipment installed inside turned into ashes in the Gen-Z revolt.
President approves Attorney General Badal’s resignation
President Ramchandra Paudel has approved the resignation tendered by Attorney General Ramesh Badal on Sunday. Spokesperson at the Office of the President, Pradip Kumar Koirala, informed through a press statement that President Paudel approved the resignation of Attorney General Badal effective from September 9.
