KMC warns businesses against misleading advertisements



KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City has issued a stern warning to businesses engaging in misleading advertisements and unfair commercial practices, particularly in the sale of daily consumer goods such as footwear and clothing.

Complaints about false claims, exaggerated promotions, and brand misuse prompted the municipal notice.

The city said no industry or business should provide false information to distributors or consumers. Key product details, including ingredients, manufacturing date, and expiry date, must be clearly displayed. Selling local products as foreign-made, distributing expired or harmful goods, or copying trademarks and brands is strictly prohibited.

Violators face strict penalties, including destruction of products, fines, and possible closure of business. Under the Consumer Protection Act, 2018, providing false or misleading information can result in a fine of up to Rs 100,000, one year imprisonment, or both. Selling counterfeit goods may attract fines up to Rs 500,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both.

The metropolitan authority urged all entrepreneurs and businesses to follow proper trade practices and advised consumers to remain vigilant against misleading claims.
