CPN-UML’s 11th General Convention to begin today

KATHMANDU: The 11th National General Convention of the CPN-UML is set to begin today, with the inauguration scheduled at the open field in Sallaghari, Bhaktapur.

According to Rajendra Gautam, Chief of the UML Publicity and Publication Department, all preparations for the convention have been completed. Approximately three lakh participants from across the country are expected to attend the opening session. More than 200 tableaux depicting Nepal’s unity will be showcased during the inaugural ceremony.

Top political leaders, including Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, Nepali Communist Party Coordinator Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, and chairpersons and representatives of 16 different political parties, have been invited to the event.

UML leader Dr. Rajan Bhattarai informed that messages of goodwill have been arriving from foreign diplomatic missions and representatives of various friendly parties from abroad.

Over 500 volunteers from 24 UML-affiliated public organizations will be deployed in uniform to ensure the convention proceeds in a peaceful and secure manner. In addition, 10,000 trained volunteers will be mobilized to maintain organized and orderly public service.

The UML has built a large, artistically designed stage featuring representations of prominent temples in the Kathmandu Valley, with the historic Changunarayan Temple, established by King Haridutta during the Lichchhavi period, serving as the central theme.

Two 30-foot-high LED screens have been installed on either side of the stage to provide clear visibility for distant attendees. A total of 115 high-quality sound systems capable of reaching up to three kilometers have been set up. Similarly, 25,000 chairs have been arranged in front of the stage for leaders, ministers, parliamentarians, and representatives of various diplomatic missions.

According to UML leader Bhanubhakta Dhakal, arrangements have also been made for cultural performances symbolizing national unity.

An electric torch will be placed beside the model of the Changunarayan Temple on stage, and preparations are underway for Party Chairman KP Sharma Oli to inaugurate the convention by lighting the torch remotely.

In honor of the party’s 11th general convention, 11 party flags will be displayed, 10 hoisted at the start and one hoisted remotely.

Parking arrangements have been made for vehicles arriving from various districts, with designated spaces at the Civil Aviation Authority’s vacant lot in Gatthaghar and at Viral Planning in Jagati for vehicles coming via Kavre. A grand rally from Gatthaghar and Jagati will precede the inauguration.
