Leopard attack prompts darting operation in Bandipur

KATHMANDU: The Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation has deployed a darting team to capture a leopard that has killed two children in the past two months in Bandipur.

According to the District Forest Division Office, the operation aims to tranquilize and relocate the leopard responsible for the fatal attacks.

The team—comprising personnel from Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, local residents, and forest officials—is currently operating in and around Kuwadi, Ward 2 of Bandipur Rural Municipality.

Sharad Adhikari, chief of the District Forest Division Office, confirmed that the primary objective is to bring the leopard under control without harm and relocate it to a safer, more appropriate habitat.

Tanahun district has been facing growing concerns over leopard-related incidents. Areas including Bhanu, Bandipur, and Aanbukhaireni have been terrorized by frequent leopard sightings and attacks.

Over the past eight years, 16 children have reportedly lost their lives to leopard attacks in the district.

Most recently, on Monday evening, a six-year-old boy named Utsav Gurung was attacked and killed by a leopard while playing in the front yard of his home in Kuwadi. The incident has intensified public pressure on authorities to take swift and effective action.
