KATHMANDU: A robbery involving Rs 6 million in cash took place in the Pepsicola Town Planning area around 9 p.m. on Wednesday night.
The amount was stolen from two bags belonging to a man who had reportedly brought the money to settle a land deal.
According to District Police Range Kathmandu spokesperson SP Apil Raj Bohara, 20 individuals have been taken into custody in connection with the case. The police have yet to make a public statement, citing an ongoing investigation.
The complainant, identified as Ritesh Lama, a resident of Boudha, reported the incident at the Kadaghari Police Division the same night. He informed the police that he had brought the cash in two bags by car after being asked to bring it for a land settlement.
Lama stated that while he was discussing the land deal upon arriving in the Town Planning area, a group of 8–9 individuals approached and robbed the two bags from his vehicle.
CCTV footage reportedly captured the robbery, and Lama was seen chasing the suspects in his car for a short distance.
The robbers are believed to have fled the scene on motorcycles and scooters.
During the investigation, police recovered Rs 3 million, including Rs 2.85 million in one of the stolen bags, from the 20 arrested individuals.
They admitted to distributing the remaining amount among themselves after seizing the second bag.
Initially, Lama claimed Rs 6 million was stolen, but later revised the amount to Rs 7.6 million after recounting.
Police have launched a parallel investigation into the origin of the money and Lama’s reason for carrying such a large amount in cash.
The arrested individuals are currently being held at the New Baneshwor Police Station as investigations continue.
