KATHMANDU: Foreign Minister Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba has emphasized that both neighboring countries, India and China, regard their relationship with Nepal as a priority.

Speaking at the meeting of the International Relations and Tourism Committee of Parliament, Minister Dr. Rana stated that the two nations have consistently maintained dialogue, contact, and interactions with Nepal.

“Various bilateral meetings, exchange visits, and communication have been taking place. Both countries have supported Nepal in the past, and this cooperation and goodwill will continue in the future,” she said.

She was responding to inquiries raised by committee members regarding Nepal’s current diplomatic relations.

Dr. Rana also highlighted the productive outcomes of Nepal’s participation in the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in the United States, where she and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli were present. She discussed agreements, understandings, and bilateral meetings during the Prime Minister’s visit to China and her own visit to India.

SAARC cannot be active by Nepal’s will alone

Minister Dr. Rana underscored that Nepal alone cannot ensure the activation of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). However, she clarified that efforts to revitalize SAARC are ongoing.

“SAARC’s charter states that its summits can only be held with the consensus of all member states. Since not all members are prepared, SAARC has not gained momentum. Nevertheless, as the chair, Nepal continues to make efforts,” she said.

She noted that while the SAARC Summit has not been held, other programs and meetings are taking place. She also mentioned her initiative during the United Nations General Assembly to convene a meeting of SAARC foreign ministers.
