Traffic police remove tinted windows from Home Minister and Home Secretary’s vehicles

KATHMANDU: Traffic police have removed black-tinted windows from the vehicles of Home Minister Sudan Gurung and Home Secretary Rajkumar Shrestha as part of an ongoing enforcement campaign against illegal window tinting.

The Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office carried out the action on Monday.

Following the launch of a drive to remove illegally tinted windows, Home Minister Gurung himself reportedly visited the traffic police office requesting that the tint be removed from his official vehicle.

Subsequently, police removed the black film from both the Home Minister’s and the Home Secretary’s vehicles. Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Chief SSP Suresh Kafle said the operation is part of a broader enforcement campaign.

Authorities have intensified action against vehicles using dark tinted windows, citing concerns over their misuse in criminal activities. Police say such vehicles have been linked to offenses including the transport of small arms, drug trafficking and consumption, gold smuggling, and facilitating the escape of fugitives.

Under Section 39 of the Vehicle and Transport Management Act vehicle owners are prohibited from altering the color, seating capacity, structure, engine, or chassis without approval from the authorized authority.
