Testing completed for new drinking water pipelines in Kathmandu Valley

KATHMANDU: The testing of newly installed pipelines for drinking water distribution in the Kathmandu Valley has been successfully completed, marking a significant step forward in improving the region’s water supply infrastructure under the Melamchi Sub-Project-2.

According to the Project Implementation Directorate (PID), the testing covered 980 kilometers of pipelines across 33 drinking water distribution networks.

Tika Bahadur Chaudhary, Chief of the Directorate, stated that 14 of the tested networks have already been handed over to the Kathmandu Valley Water Supply Management Board, while the transfer process for the remaining 19 is progressing.

Chandra Kumar Pa Shrestha, Deputy Director of the Directorate, explained that the transfer process is being carried out in phases.

In the first and second phases, 350 kilometers of pipelines spanning 14 networks were successfully tested and handed over. The remaining 19 networks are being prepared for transfer in the third phase.

The entire primary drinking water distribution system consists of 1,010 kilometers of pipelines.

As part of the project, 60,831 new water meters have also been installed to enhance the efficiency of the water supply system.

This initiative aims to resolve longstanding water scarcity issues and ensure reliable access to drinking water for residents of the Kathmandu Valley.
