Bail hearing of Rabi Lamichhane in Swarnalaxmi Cooperative embezzlement begins today

KATHMANDU: The bail hearing against Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chair and former Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane is set to commence today at 11 am at the Kathmandu District Court.

Lamichhane is accused of embezzling over Rs 50 million from savers of the Swarnalaxmi Cooperative in Kalimati, Kathmandu, through Gorkha Media.

Lamichhane had been in judicial custody following the completion of his statement recording on Sunday before the bench of Judge Madhav Prasad Adhikari.

Due to time constraints, the detention hearing, initially scheduled for Sunday, was deferred to today.

The Kathmandu District Court’s information officer, Amar Bahadur Chand, confirmed the rescheduling of the hearing and stated that police custody would continue until a decision is reached.

Lamichhane was arrested on October 18 in connection with another cooperative fraud case in Pokhara, where he faced allegations of embezzlement from the Suryadarshan Cooperative.

After spending 84 days in custody, he was released last Thursday on bail of Rs 6.5 million. Despite being directed to appear at the Kathmandu District Court on Friday, Lamichhane reported to the court only on Sunday due to logistical constraints.

The ongoing case involves allegations of misappropriating Rs 119.3 million in savings from 690 depositors of the Swarnalaxmi Cooperative.

The Kathmandu District Police have recommended charges against Lamichhane and 38 others linked to the case.
