Ilam locals forced to travel through damaged bridge despite risks

KATHMANDU: The Ilam District Administration Office has announced that vehicles can temporarily use the Ilam–Tilkeni–Banjbedi–Namsaling–Nayabazar–Fikkal road section as an alternative to the Mechi Highway.

In a notice issued on Sunday, the administration stated that the Maikhola–Rajduwali section remains closed due to geological risks.

According to local resident Niraj Khadegi of Ilam Municipality, small vehicles are currently being allowed to operate after filling the damaged portion of the bridge, as many travelers returning home for Dashain were stranded.

“The partially damaged concrete bridge over Maikhola in Ward No. 8 has been temporarily filled to allow small vehicles to pass. This route connects Suryodaya Municipality, Phidim, and the Mechi Highway,” Khadegi said.

He added that the route has only been opened temporarily and will undergo further repairs soon. However, due to continued risks, vehicle movement has been completely prohibited during nighttime hours.

As per the notice, traffic will remain closed from 10 p.m. on October 12 to 6 a.m. on October 13.
