PM Oli warns of global threat from WMD, calls for peace on Buddha Jayanti

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has warned that the ongoing global production and stockpiling of weapons of mass destruction pose a serious threat to human existence and the planet.

Addressing the 2569th Buddha Jayanti celebration in Lumbini on Monday, PM Oli highlighted the urgency of advocating for world peace.

“Today, when the work of manufacturing and stockpiling weapons of mass destruction is happening, this is very dangerous for human existence and the existence of the earth. We must once again be in favor of world peace and work to get rid of this,” he said.

Highlighting the continued relevance of Buddha’s teachings, Oli said peace is essential not just for the world but also for individuals and families. He underscored that the core values of Buddhism—peace, compassion, and humanism—should be embraced regardless of sectarian differences within Mahayana, Theravada, or Vajrayana traditions.

The Prime Minister also thanked neighboring countries India and Pakistan for exercising restraint despite recent tensions.

“There was some fighting between our neighboring countries, but the fighting did not escalate. Thank you for your restraint,” he said, revealing that Nepal had also communicated with both sides urging peace.

Oli reaffirmed the government’s commitment to developing the Lumbini region, the birthplace of Buddha, and enhancing the role of Lumbini Buddhist University in researching and promoting Buddhist philosophy.

“The university will focus on the discovery, study and research of Buddhism. And I believe that it will make a significant contribution to this,” he said.
