Jumla-Rara Ultra Marathon to kick off on May 10

JUMLA: The sixth edition of the Jumla-Rara Ultra Marathon is set to begin from May 10 from Khalanga Bazaar, the headquarters of Jumla.

The race is being organized by the Karnali Sports Club, which has been promoting sports and social development in the region for the past 17 years.

Club President Saroj Shahi shared that this year’s 51-kilometer race route has been updated to help promote trekking from Jumla to Rara Lake. The race will start from Upper Milichaur, pass through Rara Lake and Thakur Baba’s temple, and end at Hutu.

The event is being held under the leadership of Olympian and club patron Hari Bahadur Rokaya. It is supported by the Ministry of Industry, Tourism, Forest and Environment, and the Division Forest Office.

Along with the ultra-marathon, the event also includes a 5-kilometer open race for industrialists, businesspeople, and employees, and a 10-kilometer school-level race for students under 19.

International and national runners are expected to participate, including past participants from the UK, Netherlands, India, Italy, and the US.

Winners of the 51-kilometer race will receive Rs 100,000 each (male and female). Second-place winners will get Rs 75,000, third-place Rs 50,000, and fourth-place Rs 20,000.

In the 5-kilometer race, winners will get Rs 5,000, Rs 3,000 for second, and Rs 3,000 for third. School-level 10-kilometer race winners will get Rs 10,000, with second and third places receiving Rs 6,000 and Rs 4,000 respectively.

Ten percent of the registration fees will go towards building a high-altitude training center on land donated by Rokaya.

The race starts from Chandannath Bhairavnath’s courtyard in Khalanga Bazaar and ends at Hutu near Rara Lake in Mugu.
