Nepali Congress expels central member Devendra Raj Kandel for five years

NAWALPARASI (WEST): The Nepali Congress district disciplinary committee has expelled central member Devendra Raj Kandel from the party for five years.

The decision was formally communicated to Kandel on Thursday via a postal letter.

However, the disciplinary action was actually taken a day before the local elections of 2022, though it was only recently made public amid ongoing factional disputes within the party.

District Secretary Kuldeep Acharya confirmed that Kandel was disciplined on May 12, 2022, after he was found to have issued statements supporting rebel candidates opposing the party’s official nominees during the local elections.

Due to the immediate subsequent provincial and federal elections, the disciplinary process was temporarily put on hold, but it has now been officially announced and enforced.

Earlier, the central disciplinary committee had taken action against 18 members for allegedly playing roles against party-backed candidates, leading to political unrest within the Nepali Congress.

Dr. Shekhar Koirala’s faction condemned the disciplinary measures as vindictive. A meeting held at Koirala’s Baluwatar contact office on Thursday morning resolved to politically resist the decisions of the disciplinary committee.
