CPN-UML backs Maoist Centre’s draft to break parliamentary deadlock

KATHMANDU: The CPN-UML has expressed its support for a two-point draft proposal tabled by the CPN (Maoist Centre) aimed at ending the ongoing parliamentary deadlock.

UML Secretary Yogesh Bhattarai confirmed on Wednesday that his party is in agreement with the Maoist Centre’s proposal, which was presented during discussions among opposition parties seeking a common ground to move forward.

Speaking to the media outside the Federal Parliament building in New Baneshwor, Bhattarai stated, “We are on board with the Maoist Centre’s draft. However, the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has reservations about it.”

He also noted that while the UML disagreed with an alternative draft proposed by the RSP, efforts are ongoing to reach a consensus.

The deadlock in Parliament, which has persisted since early June, is rooted in opposition demands for the resignation of Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak and the formation of a parliamentary inquiry committee over alleged irregularities in the issuance of visit visas.

Given the lack of consensus, Wednesday’s House session was postponed. Bhattarai said the session has been rescheduled for Thursday at 3 pm, allowing more time for opposition parties to unify their stance.

He highlighted the urgency of resuming normal parliamentary proceedings, stating, “The House cannot remain obstructed indefinitely. It must now enter into regular business.”
