Prime Minister holds discussion with local representatives

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Sushila Karki held a meeting today with representatives from local governments.

According to her press coordinator, Ram Bahadur Rawal, the discussion was held at Baluwatar with officials from the National Association of Rural Municipalities and the National Association of Municipalities.

The meeting focused on the current situation of local governance, the challenges faced by representatives, and preparations for the upcoming elections. Participants agreed on the need for cooperation, coordination, and coexistence among federal, provincial, and local governments. They also stressed the importance of maintaining good governance and peace to create a favorable election environment.

Local representatives expressed appreciation for the government’s efforts to build hope and stability under Prime Minister Karki’s leadership. Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal and Law Minister Anil Kumar Sinha were also present. Minister Aryal requested local governments to assist in maintaining peace and order, noting that authorities are still tracing some weapons and around 5,000 escaped prisoners.

Representatives, however, raised concerns about the government’s austerity measures, saying they were unable to hire contractual staff and that several contracted projects were now uncertain. They urged the prime minister to reactivate coordination mechanisms among the three tiers of government.

Prime Minister Karki stressed that the role of local governments will be crucial in ensuring successful elections, calling for stronger coordination and cooperation. “Your role is vital in creating and preparing the election environment,” she said. “We will address your concerns, Don’t worry, continue your work with confidence. Together, we must lead the country out of this situation.”

She further clarified that the multiparty system remains essential in a democratic setup and mentioned that she had suggested the Gen-Z group form a political party if they wish to compete in elections. Karki also highlighted that discipline and political culture are vital components of democracy.

The meeting was attended by Laxmi Devi Pandey, Chair of the National Association of Rural Municipalities, and Bhim Prasad Dhungana, Chair of the National Association of Municipalities, along with other officials.
