Flames can burn my house, not my commitment to people: Mahesh Basnet

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML leader Mahesh Basnet has said that while protesters may have burned his house, they cannot destroy his dedication to the people.

A day after his residence in Bhaktapur was set on fire by demonstrators, Basnet took to Facebook on Wednesday to express resilience in the face of personal loss.

“Our house was burned, property was destroyed. But our soul, our commitment to the people cannot be consumed by flames,” Basnet wrote. He added that although his family and party members are going through pain, they will rise again “like the sturdy sal tree that stands firm against storms.”

Basnet also shared lines from poet Netralal Abhagi, emphasizing courage in the face of adversity: “Anyone can talk of bravery when there is no storm, but only the sal tree can stand tall, defying the tempest.”

The UML leader urged party members to remain patient, follow security agencies’ directives, and refrain from engaging in arson, looting, or vandalism. “Let us extend a helping hand to each other, protect both public and private property, and bring life back on the right track,” he appealed.

Basnet assured that despite the attack, he and his party remain committed to serving the nation. “Friends, after the storm, the sky turns bluer. Today we are in pain, but tomorrow we will rise stronger,” he said.
