KATHMANDU: Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) will remain closed to all flight operations until 12 noon on Wednesday amid ongoing nationwide unrest triggered by the Gen-Z-led protests.
The TIA had initially suspended operations from 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday until 1 a.m. Wednesday, but the closure has now been extended due to persistent security concerns.
Buddha Air, a leading domestic airline, issued a notice on Tuesday evening confirming the suspension of all scheduled flights until further notice.
The company expressed regret over the disruption caused to passengers and assured that full refunds would be provided for tickets of flights that could not operate.
“In light of the current situation in the country, flights to various domestic destinations have also been suspended,” Buddha Air said in a statement. “We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and assure passengers that they will be fully refunded if they are unable to travel.”
Meanwhile, the Airline Operators Association of Nepal (AOAN) has expressed its commitment to continue serving the public, even during times of national crisis.
In a statement released on Tuesday, AOAN President Manoj Karki said that all member airlines stand ready to support the people as needed.
The Association also conveyed its deep sorrow over the tragic events of September 8, when 19 young protesters reportedly lost their lives during a violent crackdown. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wish the injured a speedy recovery,” the statement read.
In response to widespread speculation on social media, the Association issued a separate clarification denying that any of its helicopters had transported politicians, ministers, or public officials during the ongoing protests.
“No helicopters have been used for political evacuations or transport,” AOAN stated, calling such rumors baseless and misleading.
As the situation continues to evolve rapidly, the aviation sector remains on high alert, with further announcements expected based on the security environment across the country.
